The NICRO App

NICRO has released an app designed to provide free access to educational content to increase access to its crime and violence prevention work. The app is powered by YoMobi, a collaboration between Capacitate Social Solutions, PwC and UNICEF. YoMobi allows non-profit organisations to create a free online profile, where they can host curated content related to their services.

YoMobi also hosts a geo-mapping search engine that allows users to search for their nearest service providers, based on their location.

Although YoMobi was designed to target youth users, anyone can register and use YoMobi.

After downloading the app for free from Google Play, users complete a basic needs assessment. In the near future, this basic needs assessment will allow YoMobi to match users with relevant service providers.

NICRO’s YoMobi app has free content on the following:

Educatioal resources for learners, caregivers and educators
Gaming and Children's Safety For Parents

NICRO’s goal in making its content available online for free is to enhance people’s access to content that can help them grow and develop skills that move them away from crime and violence.

More content will be added over the next few months. To download the app, search for YoMobi (Capacitate) in the Google Play store. An iTunes version may be created later on.

How to Use the NICRO App

Download the app from Google Play
Create an account with your cell number and a password
You will also need to enter your email address
Complete the basic needs assessment. This tells the platform what help you may need. This data is used to inform the developers of the user needs.
Search for NICRO under the Organisations search field
Click on NICRO’s block
Enter this code: 89321

You can now access all of NICRO’s content for free.

National School Safety Framework Resources

The National School Safety Framework (NSSF) is the government's school safety protocol. All state schools are required to implement the NSSF. The NSSF was developed by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP) for the Department of Basic Education. It is used by NICRO with the permission of CJCP.

Child Protection Indicators Guide

This booklet was developed by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP). It is made available here with their permission. These indicator lists have been developed to assist with the identification of children potentially in need of interventions. It is often the case that children who have problems do not get the help they require because adults are not aware of the need to refer the child. It is hoped that these indicator lists will assist in improving the access of children to services.

These indicator lists are not diagnostic tools, and they should not be used to categorise or label children. The indicator lists are very simple guides to the common indicators associated with certain problems affecting children. Even if a child has several of the indicators listed in the indicator lists, it is not for certain that the child is a victim of sexual abuse or bullying. If a child has some of the indicators of the indicator lists below, the child must be referred for a proper assessment of his/her circumstances.

Learning Through PLAY: PLAY is a FREE training course that teaches educators, parents and caregivers about how to use play to teach their child. Educators can earn 15 CPD credits as set out by the South African Council for Educators in terms of section 5(b) of the South African Council for Educators Act 31 of 2000. Click here.
Google Ditial Skills Academy: Create a free Google account and access a range of online video-based courses that result in a Google certificate. Topics range from workplace skills, computer software skills and personal growth. Click here.
IBM Training: Create a free IBM user account and access free courses on topics ranging from introduction to data security, coding and data analytics. Khan Academy: They have a large selection of free high school and university courses. These courses are designed to develop your academic skills and strengthen your grasp of academic content, rather than earn certificates. Some of the content is geared towards the USA. Click here.
Academic Earth: They have university-level content on a variety of subjects from business, education, marketing and psychology. This site does not offer certificates. The emphasis is on stimulating interest and giving people an opportunity to explore subjects so that they can decide what to study at a formal institution. Click here.
Massechusetts Institue for Technology: The courses provide detailed university-level learning opportunities. The site does not offer certifications. The site is very useful if you want to access free, high-quality learning materials on university subjects, to either explore possible formal study options, or to grow and develop yourself personally.
